The Portuguese Diamond Cut – What it is and Where it Came From

The Portuguese diamond cut is a unique way of processing a stone that involves creating a very large number of facets, which gives the effect of extreme sparkle – and if you see it for the first time, you have the impression that the diamond is "alive". If you want to see something truly unique, read on!

From my experience – clients often confuse this cut with the classic brilliant cut. And that's the first mistake.

The Portuguese cut was developed as an evolution of historical cuts – its goal was not to preserve the maximum weight of the stone (as in investment diamonds), but to maximize the visual effect.

👉 In practice, it looks like this:

  • a classic brilliant has about 57 facets
  • a Portuguese cut diamond can have even 100+ facets

And that makes a huge difference.

An example from my valuation:
A client from Katowice was looking for "something special" for a ring. I showed him a classic brilliant and a Portuguese cut diamond – both 1 ct, color G, clarity VS1.

👉 The reaction?
"The second one looks like it's twice as expensive."

And the price was similar.

This shows how much the perception of value changes with the cut.

Portuguese Cut Diamonds – Why They Sparkle the Most

Portuguese cut diamonds sparkle the most because they have significantly more facets than other cuts, which causes light to refract multiple times – the effect is that the diamond literally "explodes" with brilliance. If you're looking for a WOW effect, you have to see this!

Clients most often ask:
"Is it really that much of a difference?"

Answer: YES – and it's huge.

In practice, light enters the stone and reflects multiple times inside. Each additional facet is another reflection.

👉 The effect:

  • more brilliance
  • more "sparkles"
  • greater visibility from a distance

But... (and this is important)

The biggest mistake investors make is thinking that "more sparkle = better diamond."

Not always.

Because:

  • more facets = harder to assess clarity
  • sometimes less optical transparency

Example of a specific stone:
0.8 ct, color H, SI1 – the Portuguese cut visually looked like VS, because the inclusions were "broken up" by the facets.

👉 This is a huge advantage for lower budgets.

The Portuguese Diamond Cut – How Much It Costs and Is It Worth It

The Portuguese diamond cut can cost the same as a classic brilliant, but it gives a completely different visual effect – and from my experience, with the right choice, you can "trick the eye" and look like you bought a more expensive stone. Check out the specifics!

Let's get down to specifics – because that's what you're most interested in.

👉 Natural diamonds:

  • 0.5 ct – from approx. PLN 3,500
  • 1 ct – from approx. PLN 12,000
  • 2 ct – from approx. PLN 45,000

👉 Lab-grown diamonds:

  • 1 ct – from approx. PLN 2,500
  • 2 ct – from approx. PLN 6,000

From my experience:
If you have a budget of PLN 5,000–10,000 → a lab-grown Portuguese cut is the best choice

If above PLN 20,000 → you can consider a natural one.

👉 And now, importantly:

At Diament Expert you get:

  • the lowest prices in Poland
  • return option
  • real advice (not "hard selling")

👉 Check the current diamond offer and see the real price differences – it costs nothing and can change your decision!

Diamond Portuguese Cut – Who Is It Best For?

A Portuguese cut diamond is an ideal choice for people who want maximum visual impact and something unique – but it won't always be the best for investors. If you want to know if it's for you, read on!

From my experience:

This cut is chosen by 3 types of clients:

1. People looking for a WOW effect

Most often for engagement rings
👉 "It needs to sparkle and impress"

2. Premium clients

They want something that not everyone has
👉 rarity = prestige

3. People with limited budgets

And here's an interesting fact:

The Portuguese cut can make a diamond:

  • appear larger
  • appear cleaner

👉 This is a real advantage.

But…

If you're buying for investment – the classic brilliant still wins.

Portuguese Cut Diamond – The Biggest Mistakes When Buying

A Portuguese cut diamond can be a great choice, but only if you avoid a few key mistakes – because from my experience, most clients overpay or choose poorly. Find out what not to do!

The biggest mistake investors make is:

❌ buying "with their eyes," without considering parameters

You must look at:

  • color
  • clarity
  • proportions

Example client situation:

A client from Krakow bought a diamond "because it sparkled."
The problem? J color and visible inclusions.

👉 Looked OK in pictures
👉 In real life... not so much

Second mistake:

❌ lack of comparison

Always compare:

  • Portuguese vs. brilliant
  • natural vs. lab-grown

👉 If you want to avoid mistakes – write to us, and we will compare specific stones for you. It's free and without obligation.

Summary

The Portuguese cut offers:

  • extreme sparkle
  • unique appearance
  • a great option for a WOW effect

But it's not for everyone.

👉 If you want to buy wisely – compare, analyze, and don't buy "on emotion."

In practice, a diamond is not just a shiny stone, but a precisely cut crystal, where each cut affects the fire and contrast and visual perception. The Portuguese cut is a unique choice – it has more facets than a classic brilliant, making the diamond appear more spectacular, especially in jewelry like an engagement ring or necklace.

From my experience, clients often compare Portuguese cuts and brilliant cuts, and there's no single answer here – the brilliant is a classic and an investment, while the Portuguese is a WOW effect. Just like the emerald cut or Asscher cut, each diamond cut offers a different character. An example 1 ct diamond, with VS1 clarity, colorless or a slightly brownish-yellow color, can look completely different depending on how the cutter decided to cut the stone.

The biggest mistake is only looking at the carat weight, and not at the clarity, transparency, and inclusions (e.g., small internal flaws or flaws near the table and culet). A Gemological Institute of America certificate provides security, especially when buying loose stones or a diamond ring from a jeweler.

In practice, it looks like this: a well-cut diamond (whether round, cushion, emerald, or Portuguese diamond) can appear larger and more expensive than it actually is. That's why diamond cutting is a crucial step – the initial cut and subsequent re-cuttings determine the final effect.

As for prices, natural diamonds are more expensive than lab-grown diamonds, but both can be excellent choices for diamond jewelry. In my experience: with a lower budget, it's better to choose a better cut than a larger stone.
